Oscar Wilde’s classic is a delight from the first cucumber sandwich on as Jack’s double life catches up with him. The problems are resolved in an extremely charming and quite unexpected way as Jack and Algernon discover the importance of being earnest, while answering to the name of Ernest.
The play, celebrated for its wit and repartee, parodies contemporary dramatic norms, gently satirises late Victorian manners, and introduces – in addition to the two pairs of young lovers – the formidable Lady Bracknell, the fussy governess Miss Prism and the benign and scholarly Canon Chasuble.
When one is in town one amuses oneself. When one is in the country one amuses other people. It is excessively boring.
Time For a Classic
As much as we love doing originals at BFACT and before that BFCT, the classics will always have a special place in our hears. It is hard to get more classic than Oscar Wilde’s eternal classic of The Importance of Being Earnest. The play was such a pleasure to put on our stage from the witty banter and game of mistaken identities. It was a nice change of pace from previous years absurd comedies and dramas, it was nice to do a period piece on the Belle Fourche stage.
