We were so happy to finish our 2020 – 2021 Season with the classic comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace. It was a pleasure to present and we are so grateful for the enthusiastic response to this hilarious show.

The Story

Drama critic Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor, they killed him! Between his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police—not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage—it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding. Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic black comedy about the only thing more deadly than poison: family.

Well, dear, for a gallon of elderberry wine I take one teaspoon full of arsenic, then add half a teaspoon full of strychnine and then just a pinch of cyanide.

BFACT is back with a night of one acts

After time away in person due to the pandemic we were very excited to be back in person, this collection of locally written one-acts was our first in-person stage show since December 2019. This show was a huge success and a lot of fun, a great chance for our volunteers to get back together and perform with one another again.

The Shows

Collections

Collections tells the story of a group of workers at a call center on what might be their last day before their branch shuts down. Just because they are bad at their jobs doesn’t mean they will go down without a fight! This fast-paced comedy has lots of laughs and lots of absurdity. That is unless you’ve worked in a call center, then you might have actually met these characters before.

School Spirit

School Spirit is about different groups of people who break into a local High School on a Saturday. They may have all broken in for their own reasons but they have one thing in common, a ghost that doesn’t want them there! Join these teachers, janitors, students, nerds and graduates as they find out it is easy to break-in, getting out is the hard part. This comedy is co-written by first-time local author Toi Lyn Flick.

Doctor Vile

Doctor Vile is about the eponymous villain and his efforts to get into the villain’s union, V.E.N.O.M. The only thing standing in his way is an over-the-hill super spy, potential love, an evaluator who has no time for his nonsense and a whole bunch of incompetence. Don’t worry though, he won’t let that stand in his way. This comedy was co-written by local theater director Nathan Schreier.

Mr. Brawn is referring to V.E.N.O.M. Villains Evil Network Of Malignancy. We are a union that allows professional villains all across the globe to pool resources, share secrets, technology, that sort of thing. We are top tier villainy.

Belle Fourche Area Community Theater’s presentation of Art Thou Virtual went fantastic on the night of May 14, 2021. The cast was amazing and there were only a few technical hiccups. We want to thank the whole cast and crew as well as everyone who bought tickets to watch this unique show.

A Christmas classic performed in a new kind of way

A Christmas Carol is one of the most recognizable and beloved Christmas tales written by Charles Dickens. It tells the story of old, miserly Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After his incredible Christmas Eve, Scrooge becomes a kinder, gentler man. First published in 1843 there have been many different versions over the years, including in 1939 when Orson Welles performed it at the Campbell Playhouse.

In 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic and being unable to perform in front of a full audience, Belle Fourche Area Community Theater performed this version as a radio play. This show was sent out live across the internet to our patrons and was given free to various senior centers across the area.

Ebenezer, I am here to warn you that you have yet a chance of hope of escaping my fate. Do you hear that, Ebenezer?

Here’s a comedy package of 12 yuletide sketches just perfect to give your audience for an evening’s entertainment this Christmas! Everybody in the little town of Christmas is friendly and funny and you’ll meet them all, including Skeezix and Sylvester, an elf comedy team that is short in stature and long in laughter; Dancer, the reindeer with a whacky sense of humor; Mrs. Claus, the REAL boss of the outfit; and a hilarious street corner Santa, tested and almost bested by one tough little kid with a sticky sucker.

Also included are old favorite stories such as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” and “A Christmas Carol,” updated and aimed right for the funny bone, of course. Throw in a wandering group of carolers who cough and sneeze on cue, three kids trying their best to be wise men in the Christmas play, and a riotous lecture on Christmas etiquette, and you’re in for an evening of holiday laughter and warmth.

I help him out. In my little way, standing on this corner, I do what I can. And you should too.

Community Theater is back in Belle Fourche

After a break to reorganize and come back as a non-profit, community theater was back in Belle Fourche as Belle Fourche Community Theater became Belle Fourche Area Community Theater and we kicked off this new era with the heartwarming Christmas show, The Little Town of Christmas. Not having done theater since summer of 2018, our volunteers were so excited to be back together and on stage once again doing what we all love, theater. The show was a hit, our worry that the audience had forgotten about us after a long hiatus turned out to be nothing because they came out in droves to support theater in our small town once again.

Step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s classic, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, an international sensation that has been produced in 37 countries worldwide. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

Try the grey stuff, it’s delicious! Don’t believe me? Ask the dishes!

A Magical Experience in Belle Fourche

In 2018 Belle Fourche Area Community Theater embarked on it’s biggest show.  We had over 50 people in the cast and crew and built a two level set that changed from the little provincial town to the Beast’s monstrous castle. The show was a smash hit with our biggest audience to date. For many people that have performed for Belle Fourche Area Community Theater, this will always be their favorite.

You’ve Never Seen the 12 Days of Christmas Like this before!

It’s Christmas time and Alice wants to sing one of her favorite holiday songs, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” for the Christmas talent show. But after just a few words, the characters in the popular holiday tune begin to come to life. With each verse, Alice unleashes a wacky stream of characters that are far from what most people envision when singing “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” The play turns the traditional holiday song into a fast-paced, zany collection of characters. Who will show up next?

That’s just what we’re protesting against. Greed! Greed. Everybody wants milk. Milk for ice cream. Milk for cereal. And this time of the year, it gets even worse with this whole “leaving milk and cookies for Santa” thing. But the ladies of NAFOM are tired of being taken advantage of.

With a decade as big as the 80s, one play just isn’t enough

In 2017 Belle Fourche Area Community Theater presented another night of one acts, a favorite of many volunteers over the years. This time BFACT went back to the 80’s to present three comedic one acts based on different 80’s genre favorites. The night started with Hero of Eternity, a spoof of the 80’s classic He-Man with a twist. Frightmare at Butcher Lake 3: The New Class was a send-up of the slew of slashers that permeated the decade. The night ended with the musical Johnny Wayward and the Sirens of Nuketown, a favorite of anyone who loved Snake Plisken or Mad Max, but with singing.

I could literally see you. I just started walking that way, it wasn’t even like twenty feet. Also, I have ears.

Sally – Frightmare at Butcher Lake 3: The New Class

A Show That Couldn’t Happen Anywhere Else

This show will always hold a special place in the hearts of many who participated in it. The writer of Hero of Eternity writer, Derek Olson’s first words were He-Man and he was able to grow up, write a spoof of He-Man and even get to play him on stage. BFACT is such a special place because we get to provide such off the wall opportunities for people you can’t really get anywhere else. Even beyond that, the show had a large cast of people who were game for anything, especially given many of them played roles in each show. It was a night of laughs, from the audience and backstage. How often do you get to say you get to be murdered by a hooded slasher with a sharp tennis racket and then thirty minutes later sing like Pat Benatar as you murder mutants. It was a special show for everyone involved.

Climb Aboard the Big Ship For a Comedy Cruise With Dina & T

Join Dina and T, characters from Honeymoon on the Rusted Rail, as they take a cruise and find themselves in another adventure. This time they are joined by an Italian lover named Ludovico, a rich widow, a few grifters, an interesting captain and his crew of misfits, a detective, and their old friends Megan and Sy. This original comedy by writer/director Monte Amende was full of laughs and heart and was enjoyed by many in the community and was a fantastic followup to Honeymoon.

Life is in their hands. Death is on their minds.

A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance,” mutters the guard as twelve jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case—until one of the jurors begins opening the others’ eyes to the facts. “This is a remarkable thing about democracy,” says the foreign-born juror, “that we are notified by mail to come down to this place—and decide on the guilt or innocence of a person; of a man or woman we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing.”

But personal it is, with each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and they become twelve angry jurors.

This is somebody’s life. We can’t decide in five minutes.

Juror 8

The classic drama comes to Belle Fourche

Twelve Angry Jurors was one of those wish list plays for many in Belle Fourche Community Theater. One of those shows you hope you get to do someday, but you don’t think you will ever really get a chance to do it. In 2016, that day came and we were able to tackle one of the all-time great dramas and we were so happy to get to do the non-gender specific version, Twelve Angry Jurors. For many in the cast, this was the highlight of their community theater acting career, there may have been more fun shows to do, but not many that were as much of an acting opportunity as this. The play itself has so many meaty scenes and monologues to dig into and the cast did such a great job that many in the audience didn’t even recognize some of our regulars.
